Waste Counter

For the year ending June 2009 the amount of waste that Christchurch households sent to Kate Valley Landfill was 222,685 tonnes*. That’s 639kg per person per year. It is broken down as follows:

Green 15%
Kitchen 23%
Paper & Card 14%
Plastic  10%
Glass 4%
Metal 5%
Wood 12%
Rubble 10%
Textiles & Rubber 7%
Potentially hazardous 1%

A recent press release from Transwaste Canterbury stated that the amount of Canterbury waste that went to Kate Valley landfill during 2009 was 231,123 tonnes, 52,044 tonnes less than in 2008. Read more here. 

Over the coming year SIFT will be looking to obtain more detailed information about how much waste is produced across Canterbury and where it all goes (landfill, recycling, offshore).
