Year to June 2010

For the year ending June 2010 the total amount of waste sent to Kate Valley Landfill reduced by 20% on the previous year. The total amount includes rubbish from kerbside collection, from transfer stations and from commerical and private operators just from Christchurch and was approx 179,207 tonnes (down from 222,685 tonnes last year). That’s 514kg per person this year down from over 639kg last year (Christchurch population of 348,400 StatisticsNZ).

The 2008 Christchurch City Council waste survey found that the waste was broken down* as follows:

Green 15%
Kitchen 23%
Paper & Card 14%
Plastic  10%
Glass 4%
Metal 5%
Wood 12%
Rubble 10%
Textiles & Rubber 7%
Potentially hazardous 1%
